According to an exclusive HITC Sport report, Wigan Athletic are in competition with Bristol City for the signature of Colchester United midfielder Alex Gilbey.
With Gilbey refusing to sign a new contract for John McGreal’s Colchester United following the Essex club’s relegation to League Two, Wigan Athletic and Bristol City are competing to sign the talented midfielder.
As Colchester United’s player of the season, he has been attracting a lot of interest particularly considering that he will be available on a free transfer.
Bristol City has been a long time admirer of the young midfielder and made a bid for Gilbey in the January transfer window which was described as a ‘joke’ by former Colchester United manager Kevin Keen.
With the strained relationship between Bristol City and Colchester United after the bid, Wigan Athletic may be able to take advantage of Bristol City’s misfortune and sign the midfielder from under Lee Johnson’s nose.
With Wigan Athletic securing promotion to the Championship, Gary Caldwell can promise the same level of football that Bristol City.
However, it will be up to Alex Gilbey to decide where his future lies.
Wigan fans, how do you feel about the news? Would you like to see Alex Gilbey at your club? What do you think he could offer and how do you think that he would fit into the system? Let us hear your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below!
