Wigan Athletic set to appoint new manager after parting ways with caretaker boss

Paul Cook is set to be named as the new manager of Wigan Athletic, according to BBC Radio Solent via BBC Sport.

Wigan Athletic are set to poach Paul Cook from Portsmouth after he helped the south coast side win the League Two title last season.

Conversely, Wigan were relegated to the Championship after three different managers failed to inspire them to survival and they will play in the same division as Portsmouth next season.

Gary Caldwell, Warren Joyce and Graham Barrow (caretaker) all took turns in trying to lift Wigan from the relegation zone but none succeeded.

Barrow has now departed Wigan Athletic and Cook is expected to come in.

The 50-year-old, who has one year left on his Portsmouth deal, is expected to be officially unveiled today.

Paul Cook is set to ignore Portsmouth’s new long term contract to join Wigan, who he used to represent in his playing days.
