Wigan Athletic look set to lose Nick Powell this summer, with the playmaker reportedly rejecting the opportunity to extend his deal with the Latics.

That’s the latest according to reliable journalist, Alan Nixon, who is reporting that Powell has rejected a ‘big’ new offer from Wigan and will be on the move, with a expected move elsewhere in England seemingly on the horizon.

Earlier in 2019 Powell was linked with a host of clubs across the Championship, with Football Insider noting that Leeds United had an interest in the playmaker as they look to replace the seemingly outgoing Samu Saiz.

In addition to that, Norwich City were linked with Powell by TEAMtalk, whilst a transfer to Celtic was also touted, although Nixon seems to think a move across England is likely.

For Powell, should he leave Wigan, it’ll end a three-year association with the Latics, where he has shone in both the Championship and League One, striking 29 league goals.

The 2018/19 campaign was a mixed one for Powell, he suffered a lot with injury, but was also able to score eight goals and assist a further six, as Paul Cook’s side retained their place in the Championship.

The Verdict

This is a blow for Wigan, but in many ways, it was expected to happen.

Powell is a talented, talented lad, and at 25, you have to ask how long he could’ve possibly stuck around at Wigan if he wanted to reach the very top again.

Leeds will be keen on a player like Powell on a free, whilst you can definitely see the benefit of Norwich making their move for him.

Whatever the step Powell takes, he will improve his new club.
