Wigan Athletic are running the rule over Darron Gibson in pre-season training as they weigh up whether to hand the midfielder a football lifeline, according to The Sun.

Gibson has been impressing Wigan manager Paul Cook in training and an offer could be made for him if he continues to improve his fitness in an extended trial period.

The 27-cap Republic of Ireland international was most recently at Sunderland, who terminated his contract for disciplinary reasons.

This was after he was caught drink driving for the second time in three years but he managed to avoid jail for this offence.

Gibson also caused controversy when he criticised his Sunderland team-mates in a video which went viral.

The 30-year-old had previously played for Manchester United and Everton in the Premier League but he is hoping to get his career back on track with the Latics.

Wigan are also considering another two players on trial: former Latics defender James Perch and ex-Arsenal left-back Marc Bola.

The Verdict

Gibson seems like he might be more trouble than he's worth.

Given the negative press that would come with this signing, is it really worth it for someone who never looked that fussed when representing Sunderland?

Although, perhaps this is the turning point in his career as he seems to be doing all he can to impress on trial.
