A reliable journalist has revealed that Wigan Athletic are hoping to sign Kelvin Mellor from Blackpool.

According to Alan Nixon, Wigan are trying to sign Blackpool defender Kelvin Mellor as they eye defensive reinforcements ahead of their promotion push.

Paul Cook wants another defender in his ranks to add depth at the back ahead of the run-in.

Mellor, who stands at 6ft 3in tall, has been identified as a top target.

The 26-year-old has been with Blackpool since summer 2016 and he has already played over 80 games for the Tangerines.

In that time, he has scored twelve goals and he remains a threat from set pieces.

Prior to his spell at Bloomfield Road, Mellor spent time with Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle.

He is now being targeted by Wigan, who hope to tempt him with the prospect of Championship football next season.

Wigan are currently top of League One and they have a five point gap over Blackburn Rovers in the automatic promotion slots.

Blackpool, on the other hand, will be keen to keep Kelvin Mellor after slipping towards the relegation zone.

Gary Bowyer's men are 16th and they are four points ahead of Northampton Town, who occupy the final relegation spot.

The Verdict

Wigan want another defender and Mellor fits the bill as he has plenty of lower league experience. He might not be the first choice at Wigan but he is definitely a solid option to have in reserve. It depends on whether he sees the Wigan move as a chance to further his career and move up the leagues or whether he wants to remain at Blackpool, keep them afloat and kick on next season.
