Wigan Athletic preparing move for Premier League goalkeeper

According to a reliable journalist, Wigan Athletic want to sign Brighton and Hove Albion defender Christian Walton on a season long loan deal.

Alan Nixon – a respected football journalist from The Sun – is reporting that Wigan Athletic are lining up a loan deal for Christian Walton as they look to solve their goalkeeper crisis.

After losing David Stockdale and replacing him with Mathew Ryan, Brighton and Hove Albion could be set to sanction another loan deal for their prize youngster.

Christian Walton is highly rated by the club and is regarded as one of the country’s best goalkeeping prospects.

The 21-year-old already has four senior appearances for Brighton under his belt and has gained experience from profitable loan spells at Bury, Plymouth Argyle, Luton Town and Southend United.

Standing at 6’5”, Christian Walton is a towering and commanding presence between the sticks and he has already played at League One level, which would benefit Wigan.

Wigan are searching for a new goalkeeper this summer after releasing veteran stopper Jussi Jaasekelainen and selling Matt Gilks to Scunthorpe United.

This leaves the Latics with no senior goalkeepers in their ranks and Dan Lavercombe, 20, is the number one stopper at this stage.

A new goalkeeper is a priority and Walton fits the bill.

The England under-20 international is likely to be available for a loan with Wigan seeing him as a cheap short-term solution to the goalkeeper problem.
