Wigan Athletic are ready to move for Kelvin Mellor, according to HITC Sport.
Mellor is available on a free agent now that his contract with Blackpool has come to an end and Wigan are hoping to beat off a number of competitors to win the race for his signature.
Blackburn Rovers are one of the clubs credited with an interest in the towering 6ft 3in defender.
Primarily a full-back, Mellor is also comfortable in central defence and Wigan were considering a swoop for him in January.
They are now ready to revisit this deal with Paul Cook intent on bringing him to the Championship with him.
Mellor spent two years with Blackpool after joining on a free transfer from Plymouth Argyle.
Prior to his time with the Pilgrims, Mellor was at Crewe Alexandra but now he could be set to step up to Championship level.
The 27-year-old is weighing up his options but Wigan are preparing a move to offer him terms and win this chase.
Mellor is a dominant and combative full-back who would be a good squad option for the Latics.
The free agent is a good risk-free signing to bulk out the Wigan squad ahead of the Championship campaign.
After impressing at League Two and League One level, Mellor now seems ready to step up again to play second tier football.
