Wigan Athletic are poised to sign Jamal Lowe after agreeing a fee with Portsmouth, report Football Insider.

The Latics have been long-term admirers of the winger, and along with Millwall had bids rejected for the 25-year-old earlier this summer.

Paul Cook managed Lowe during his spell at Pompey, and they look set to be reunited, with the player to undergo a medical ahead of a £2.5m switch.

Portsmouth had been determined to hold onto him this summer, rejecting offers believed to be worth £1.5m despite Lowe only having a year remaining on his current contract.

However, Pompey have signed a replacement in John Marquis so are now willing to allow Lowe to leave.

According to Football Insider, Lowe will sign a three-year deal as he begins his first taste of football in the second-tier.

It has been quite a meteoric rise for the forward, he only joined Pompey in 2016 from Hampton & Richmond but didn't take long to become a key player, and his 15 goals and nine assists last season were crucial to his side's promotion push.

The Verdict

This is a brilliant signing and Cook will be delighted to finally get it over the line. Lowe is still quite raw in the way he plays but he uses that to his benefit.

He is so quick and direct and his ability to score from the tightest of angles means he is a nightmare for defenders, as even when the danger seems clear he is capable of finding a gap to score or find a teammate.

The Championship will suit him really well and if The Latics show more attacking intent this season then he should really enjoy himself. He now has a big price tag to live up to but with the faith and backing from his manager he should excel.
