Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook confirmed that he would be interested in re-signing Callum Elder from Leicester City, according to Wigan Today.

Reece James left to join Sunderland this summer, leaving Wigan without a left-back on their books going into the new season.

And Cook has confirmed that they could bring Elder back to the DW Stadium, after he played a crucial role in their promotion campaign last season.

The 23-year-old joined the Latics on loan for the season last July and played 33 games for the club as they won the League One title.

Cook said: “For what Callum’s done at this club last year, he would certainly be on the list.”

The former Australia youth international is currently with the senior Leicester squad, preparing for the new season, but his future at the King Power Stadium looks uncertain as he sits behind Ben Chilwell in the pecking order.

The former Brentford and Barnsley loanee could head back to Wigan this summer now.

The Verdict

If Wigan could get him on another loan or on a cheap deal, Elder would be a great signing.

After being sent off in his first match for Wigan, he improved massively over the course of the year and was a crucial part of the squad.

Elder needs to move away from Leicester for his career's sake and Wigan is the perfect environment for him to kick on.
