Wigan Athletic have prepared a deal for a young goalkeeper to come in on loan, according to a reliable journalist.

Respected football journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Wigan will sign an unnamed young goalkeeper and that more information will follow with this piece of news.

After releasing Jussi Jaaskelainen, Matt Gilks was the only senior goalkeeper left on Wigan's books.

However, the 35-year-old is also set to leave Wigan Athletic this summer as he closes in on a switch to Scunthorpe United, Alan Nixon has confirmed.

This leaves Wigan without a goalkeeper going into their campaign in League One, after being relegated from the Sky Bet Championship in disappointing fashion last season.

Young duo Dan Lavercombe and Owen Evans, both 20, are the only goalkeepers in Wigan's ranks and neither have played a single game in the Football League to date.

This is why Wigan Athletic have already got a loan move for a young goalkeeper lined up for when Matt Gilks does depart and join Wigan's League One rivals Scunthorpe imminently.

Wigan will be hoping to instantly bounce back from the third tier again but might need another goalkeeper signing as well as this youngster who is set to arrive on loan.
