Wigan Athletic have been impressed by a trio of players on trial, according to a reliable football journalist.
Alan Nixon reports that Darron Gibson, James Perch and Ross Wallace – all of whom are trialling with Wigan – are “doing themselves favours” and are on the pre-season trip to Spain.
Wigan manager Paul Cook is running the rule over several targets ahead of potential summer bargain moves and these three are firmly in his mind.
Gibson has been a free agent since being sacked by Sunderland following a string of off-the-field issues including a rant about his own team-mates and a second drink driving offence.
The Republic of Ireland international – formerly of Manchester United and Everton – plays as a central midfielder and wants to get his career back on track with this move.
Perch is well known to Wigan fans, having played nearly 100 games there between 2013 and 2015.
The 32-year-old is versatile and experienced so Wigan are keeping their tabs on the man who was recently released by Queens Park Rangers.
Wallace was released by Sheffield Wednesday and is looking for a new club.
The 33-year-old boasts over a decade worth of experience in the English leagues.
All three of these players could be decent squad additions if they are on their best form.
Gibson is a risk given his disciplinary issues but if he is determined to turn his life around, perhaps he is worth a punt.
Perch and Wallace add experience and nous at this level.
