Wigan Athletic hoping to poach towering defender from League One side

Shrewsbury Town defender Omar Beckles is wanted by newly-promoted Wigan Athletic, according to HITC Sport.

Wigan were promoted to the Championship as League One title winners at the first time of asking, while Shrewsbury suffered defeat in the play-off final, losing to Rotherham United in extra-time.

With the Shrews set for another year in the third tier, Wigan are hoping to poach Beckles, who has been a star performer in League One this season.

The 26-year-old, who can play as a centre-half or as a left-back, was named in the EFL League One Team of the Year as a reward for his strong displays at the back for Paul Hurst’s side.

Wigan are hoping to snap up the 6ft 3in defender, who joined Shrewsbury from Accrington Stanley last summer.

The East Londoner has had to be patient with his football career, starting out in Spain with Jerez Industrial before spending five years in England playing with numerous non-league teams prior to his move to Accrington in 2016.

Wigan are looking to sign some more defenders to add strength in depth to their squad and Beckles is able to play as a left-back or provide competition for Dan Burn and Chey Dunkley at centre-back.

The Verdict

There is a tendency for football fans to have short memories.

So rather than remember Beckles for his excellent season at Shrewsbury where he provided the foundation for their third-place finish with dominant displays which saw him named in the EFL League One Team of the Year, they instead think of his poor performance at Wembley, which cost the Shrews their place in the Championship.

Beckles has had to bide his time to get to this position so he would be hungry for success at a higher level and his versatility also makes him a useful squad option for Wigan.
