Wigan Athletic have been dealt a frustrating injury blow, with it emerging that Callum Lang has undergone surgery on a broken foot.

Lang is currently on loan with League One side Shrewsbury Town, but fractured his metatarsal in a win over Tranmere Rovers earlier this month.

Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts labelled Lang's injury as 'a real disappointment' (quotes sourced from Wigan Today), and the 21-year-old is set to be ruled out of action for up to three months.

“It is a real disappointment for Langy, and for us, that he will be out of action for a while.

“We will give him all the support and help to make sure that he comes back stronger from this setback."

Lang spent last season on loan with Oldham Athletic and scored 16 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions for the League Two club.

Wigan clearly had high-hopes for the forward this season, as they sent him out on loan to find regular game time, which he was unlikely to get with Paul Cook's side in the Championship.

The Latics are currently sat 19th in the Championship table, and will be hoping to keep themselves clear of the bottom three as the season progresses.

Wigan are next in action when they take on Nottingham Forest, in what is certain to be a tricky test for Cook's side at the weekend.

The Verdict:

The Latics will be keen to see Lang return from action at the earliest of opportunities.

They sent him out on loan to find regular minutes in senior football, and has looked impressive in his five league appearances for Shrewsbury Town this term.

This will be an irritating setback for the Wigan youngster, who will have ambitions of playing for the first team in the near future.
