Championship side Wigan Athletic are interested in signing American defender Lucas Pos on a free transfer, according to reputable journalist Alan Nixon.

The Latics have endured an extremely tough start to the 2019/20 season, winning just one of their opening five league games and conceding 11 goals in the Championship thus far.

With Paul Cook's side still permitted to sign free agents despite the transfer window closing a fortnight ago, it is now claimed that Wigan are keen to sign Pos on a free transfer.

The 21-year-old, who has made two appearances for the USA under-23 national side, is searching for a new club after being released by Swiss side Team Vaud at the end of last season.

Vaud are the youth team side of Swiss Challenge League outfit FC Lausenne-Sport, and Pos made 11 appearances for Lausenne during his time with the European club before being released at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Able to play as a right-back or even drop into defensive midfield, Wigan will be hoping to land the American on a free transfer, as Cook looks to add more defensive steel to his struggling side.

The Verdict

Pos looks to be a really interesting player on paper - he's made a few appearances for the USA sides and seems to have a vaguely similar background to Matt Miazga.

He has impressed over in Switzerland and will now be looking to hit the ground running if he makes the move to England.

He looks to be a really versatile player able to play primarily as a centre-half, but also in a number of different positions, and on a free transfer, it's definitely worth a shout.
