Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic are eyeing up what would be a shock move for Benfica midfielder Alfa Semedo.

The 21-year-old has struggled to break into the first XI on a regular basis for the Portuguese giants, and he could now be set for a move to England with the Latics circling.

According to Alan Nixon, the Latics are keen on signing Semedo, who spent time with Espanyol last season but has ultimately as yet failed to realise the massive potential Benfica see in him.

Wigan are keen on adding to their squad this summer as manager Paul Cook looks to improve his team and avoid any repeat of last term where they were once again embroiled in a firm relegation battle which in the end, they comfortably saw off.

The addition of someone like Semedo would no doubt turn a few heads in Wigan, with the Benfica midfielder not exactly the sort of signing we would normally expect to see a club in the lower regions oft he Championship be looking to make.

Semedo will be looking to prove himself if he does indeed get a move to the Championship as he looks to get some much needed game time and show his worth to his parent club.

The Verdict

This would be quite the signing for the Latics if they can indeed pull it off.

Semedo has plenty of quality and while we know little about him in the main, you don't play for a club the size of Benfica without having some talent in the locker.

Wigan need improvements and new players given the likes of Reece James have returned to parent clubs, and Semedo could well prove the big signing they need to boost proceedings over the summer.
