Sky Bet Championship side Wigan Athletic are interested in signing Barnsley defensive duo Liam Lindsay and Ethan Pinnock in the summer, according to reports from reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The defenders have been regulars for Daniel Stendel's promotion-chasing Barnsley side this season, and have forged an incredible understanding together at the back.

The pair, both aged 25 or under, have been at the heart of a Barnsley defence that boast the best defensive record in League One, having conceded just 36 goals in 43 league games this term.

And after a string of solid performances for the Tykes, both players are being eyed up by Championship side Wigan Athletic, with Paul Cook reportedly keen on signing the duo.

23-year old Lindsay signed for the Tykes from Partick Thistle last term, and the Scotsman has since attracted interest from Aston Villa and Stoke over the last couple of months.

25-year old Pinnock worked his way up from non-league, and signed on at Oakwell from Forest Green Rovers last season. The towering defender has been attracting interest from Brentford over the last few months.

Wigan picked up an invaluable three points on the road against Leeds United on Good Friday, where Gavin Massey struck twice to send the 10-men Latics home with a crucial win.

Cook's men now sit 20th in the league standings, five points clear of the relegation zone.

The Verdict

It would be some coup for Wigan if they managed to lure both Pinnock and Lindsay away from Oakwell in the summer.

I think a lot would depend on whether the Tykes win promotion this year or not, and if they do not, then they could well lose their star defenders.

They would be massive players to replace, although you would suspect that they will leave for a lot of money in the summer if they were to depart Oakwell.
