Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of former Aston Villa defender Liam Ridgewell on a six-week loan deal from Portland Timbers, according to the Latics’ official website.
The 30-year-old becomes Malky Mackay’s first signing as Wigan manager.
“I’ve loved my time out in Portland,” the London-born defender told Latics Player.
“It’s been great and I can’t wait to go back, but I’ve had a lot of time off over Christmas and I’m chomping at the bit to get back on the football field and train.
“I’m very glad it’s at Wigan that I’ll be able to do that.”
Ridgewell started his career in West Ham United’s youth ranks, before joining Aston Villa in 2001. He made 72 appearances for the club before moving to bitter rivals Birmingham City in 2007.
The former England U21 international went on to feature 152 times for the Blues, including a 2-1 League Cup final victory over Arsenal in 2011.
Ridgewell will wear the number 27 shirt at the DW Stadium, and is in line to make his debut away at former club Birmingham on Saturday.
