The 30-year-old becomes Malky Mackay’s first signing as Wigan manager.

“As soon as we found out Liam was a possibility, we moved quickly,” said Mackay to the Wigan official site.
“We have him until the start of the MLS season in mid-February and hopefully we can make good use of his experience in that time.“He is a top-pro who has spent the majority of his career in the Premier League but he also knows this league inside out having earned promotion with Birmingham and he will add the kind of experience that will be crucial to us at this time.”Ridgwell has played over 350 league games in England over an 11-year spell.

“I’ve loved my time out in Portland,” the London-born defender told Latics Player.

“It’s been great and I can’t wait to go back, but I’ve had a lot of time off over Christmas and I’m chomping at the bit to get back on the football field and train.

“I’m very glad it’s at Wigan that I’ll be able to do that.”

Ridgewell started his career in West Ham United’s youth ranks, before joining Aston Villa in 2001. He made 72 appearances for the club before moving to bitter rivals Birmingham City in 2007.

The former England U21 international went on to feature 152 times for the Blues, including a 2-1 League Cup final victory over Arsenal in 2011.

Ridgewell will wear the number 27 shirt at the DW Stadium, and is in line to make his debut away at former club Birmingham on Saturday.
