Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell says that chairman Dave Sharpe probably regrets setting the Latics a triple figured points target for this season, following an indifferent start to the season.

Caldwell feels Sharpe may regret his pre-season comment

The grandson of former owner Dave Whelan is the youngest chairman in the Football League at the age of 23 and during the close season said that he wanted to 'smash' League One and also reach 100 points.

Caldwell has overseen seven League One games this season and has an ordinary return of ten points from those games, which leaves the club in a mediocre tenth position.

Caldwell spoke to BBC Radio Manchester yesterday. He said: "It's something that he said publicly and he probably regrets it now.

"He's enthusiastic, he wants to do that for the club and for the supporters and so do I.

"We've obviously found it's going to be very difficult this season but we believe that success will come to this club really soon."

The Latics were relegated from the Championship last season just two seasons after winning the FA Cup and are finding out the hard way that they are the team to beat in League One this season.

Caldwell continued: "We are a big scalp this season and particularly away from home we are going to find that.

"When we go to away stadiums, the fans are up for it, the team are up for it and we have to learn to deal with that."

The Latics currently sit in tenth position in Sky Bet League, having won three times, drawn once and lost three times.
