Wigan Athletic have emerged interested in Sheffield United midfielder Regan Slater, as per a report from the Sheffield Star.

The Latics join Hull City with an interest in the 22-year-old, with Hull Live confirming that the Tigers have reignited their pursuit of Slater after missing out on a summer move.

Slater featured 27 times for Hull during their League One winning campaign last time out, playing an integral role in a holding midfield position.

The 22-year-old has not played a single minute for the Blades this Championship season, with the young midfielder down in the pecking order at Bramall Lane.

Wigan, who are currently competing at the top end of the third-tier, will be hoping to bolster their promotion chances with the addition of a player who played his role in helping Hull through League One last time out.

The verdict

It is a surprise that Hull were unable to secure a move for the 22-year-old during the summer, given the fact that he has not been close to the first team at any given stage this season.

Hull have first-hand experience of knowing what Slater can bring to their midfield, and given they have reignited their pursuit of Slater, they will be confident that he can shine at Championship level.

Wigan are looking to strengthen their promotion bid with a talented young player who can help guide the Latics back to the Championship.

As much of a surprise as it is that Slater has not been given much of a chance with the Blades, a further loan stint, or even a permanent departure seems to be the best option.
