Wigan agreed a £150,000 fee for the striker, who is Inverness' top scorer during this season as they push to play European football next season.

The striker caught Malky Mackay's eye after scoring five in his last five games, all of which Inverness have won.

The Lactics are keen to expand their attacking options due to their two summer signings Oriol Riera and Andy Delort failing to impress. Riera has left the club on loan whilst Delort is searching for a new club.

Inverness manager John Hughes admitted that he would love to keep hold of his man, but admitted it may be tough.

He said to the Daily Mail: "I think, if Billy does move on, he'll go away with the best wishes of everyone at Inverness and, if he does move on to something bigger and better, possibly you're looking at the English Championship, he deserves that."

McKay started his career at Leicester City as a youth player and moved to Northampton Town in 2009. Since joining Inverness he's scored 54 goals in 121 appearances.

Wigan lost their last Sky Bet Championship game against Huddersfield Town 1-0 at the DW Stadium.

After 82 minutes without goals, Huddersfield's Conor Coady, who was man of the match, put in an effort from miles out wide which eventually floated into the back of the net.

In what has been a catastrophic year for Wigan, who were promotion hopefuls at the start of the season, they now sit in the relegation zone in 23rd spot having accumulated 21 points this season.
