After a slow start to the season, Wigan Athletic are now fighting for promotion at the top of the League One table.

The Latics have climbed up the division under Gary Caldwell and look well placed to snatch one of the automatic promotion spots at the very least.

With a potential return back to the Championship on the cards, Wigan must remain focused on the task ahead and cannot afford to get too concerned with the ultimate goal of winning the title.

Wigan have one of the strongest squads in League One and Caldwell has plenty of talent at his disposal. It’s vital that the Latics boss remains grounded and focuses on one game at a time – especially as the matches start to come thick and thin.

If the squad begin to look ahead and dismiss certain fixtures, they will be in danger of slipping up and becoming complacent. And Wigan simply cannot afford to stay in the third tier of English football.

With the likes of Will Grigg, Craig Davies and Sam Morsy in the squad, Wigan have plenty of quality in attacking areas – a key reason for their success this season. The Latics have netted 65 goals this campaign, more than anyone else in League One.

As of March 31st, Wigan are 4/6 with Betway to go on and win the third tier and it would take a brave man to back against the Latics on current form. Wigan haven’t lost in the league since falling to Blackpool 1-0 back in December and Caldwell is already eyeing up what he describes as a “convincing promotion”.

Next up for the Latics is a trip to Shrewsbury Town and you can back Wigan at 3/4 at https://sports.betway.com. Earlier in the season, Wigan secured a 1-0 victory over the Shrews and Latics fans would certainly settle for the same result again this weekend.

Given time, Wigan could mature into an outstanding side – they certainly have enough quality and promising prospects in their ranks. However, they must keep the likes of Grigg and Davies at the DW Stadium, otherwise they may struggle to climb back into the top flight.

But for the time being, promotion back to the Championship shows that Wigan are heading in the right direction and who knows, Caldwell may be the right man to guide the Latics to the Premier League. Under Roberto Martinez, they enjoyed reasonable levels of success and Caldwell’s men may take inspiration from the Latics’ FA Cup winning side of 2013.
