Sheffield Wednesday have endured a frustrating season and it won’t be until next season that we see Jos Luhukay create the sort of team he wants at Hillsborough.

Patience is very hard to come by in football but Owls fans will have to try their best as they let their new manager get to grips with the Yorkshire club.

After the initial positivity of Luhukay’s appointment was followed with a spirited draw in the Steel City derby, it looked as if Wednesday could have a strong end to the campaign.

However, in his three league games since Wednesday have drawn two and lost one.

Whilst the FA Cup wins make for a reasonable start, Luhukay is experimenting and getting to know his players, so supporters could face more disappointing days like the one against Birmingham last time out.

With relegation unlikely and the play-offs well out of reach it could be a dull end to the season for fans which may be hard to take, however it is ideal for Luhukay and the players should be playing for their future.

It gives him much-needed time to assess his players, Wednesday’s weaknesses and the rest of the division ahead of a promotion push next season.

It’s very unusual for managers to have a relatively pressure free environment to work in but Luhukay has been afforded that luxury and must use it wisely.

The Owls injury crisis is beginning to ease, even if the number of absentees is still at a ridiculous level, and that will be a big boost to the boss, who was reluctant to go mad in the transfer market knowing so many players were due back.

Now it’s down to the former Gladbach coach to ensure everything is prepared for next season and settling on a formation, style and deciding which players he wants.

The short-term pain might not be ideal for the Owls but the long-term gain may make it all worthwhile.
