The standout game in the Championship tonight will see Cardiff City travel to Aston Villa as they look to keep hold on to the final automatic promotion position.

The Bluebirds were involved in a remarkable game on Friday night, where they managed to miss two last minute penalties in a 1-0 defeat to leaders Wolves.

That has left Neil Warnock’s men nervously looking over their shoulder ahead of tonight’s tough test at Villa Park and whilst Fulham are the major concern, Steve Bruce still thinks his side can make a late push for second.

Even though the Welsh side played a night before Villa, Warnock is surely going to freshen things up given what Friday will have taken out of his players, mentally as much as anything.

One of those who could return to the starting XI is Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who was a second half sub against the league leaders.

Whilst Yanic Wildschut didn’t really make a strong case to keep his place after his performance, Warnock may also factor in how Mendez-Laing did against Villa earlier in the season.

The West Midlands side were unable to handle the sheer pace and power of the winger who was superb in a 3-0 win for Cardiff.

Not only did he score two goals, but his dribbling and goal threat was huge for the Bluebirds in what was a memorable win.

Steve Bruce and his Villa players will surely remember the problems the 25-year old caused and Mendez-Laing could once again be the difference in this promotion clash if he is given a chance.
