Leeds United will likely be very content with how the 2019/20 campaign has started.

They’re top of the Championship after seven games and, even after the departure of Pontus Jansson, have conceded the fewest goals in the league this season.

Off the field, they’ve wrapped up some important pieces of business, such as the new deals for Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper, and Stuart Dallas, and look to be making progress on their new training ground.

Is this the WORST Leeds United XI from the last 15 years? We'll let YOU decide....

One man at Elland Road who does not seem to be enjoying the Whites' success as much as others is Jack Clarke.

The 18-year-old is a product of the Leeds academy but joined Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for a reported fee of £10 million in the summer after an impressive breakthrough season last term–making 25 appearances and contributing two goals and two assists.

The winger was sent back to Elland Road on a season-long loan to provide him with some first-team football and aid his development, however, that hasn’t really happened so far.

The Whites took six players on loan in the transfer window and due to EFL regulations only five can feature in a matchday squad–so far, Clarke has been the one left out.

The teenager is yet to feature in the league this season and his only appearances have come in the first two rounds of the Carabao Cup, a competition that the Whites have now been knocked out of.

Clarke is understood to be unhappy and Spurs are reportedly set to recall him in January to loan him somewhere else instead.

It appears that the Englishman will have many suitors, as West Ham United and Crystal Palace are believed to be tracking Clarke’s situation at Leeds, with Everton also keen on taking him on loan.

The teenager looked brilliant in spells last season, regularly providing Marcelo Bielsa with extra attacking impetus from the bench, and it is understandable that the Premier League trio could see some value in bringing him in.

However, Spurs need to be very careful not to make the same mistake they have made in sending him to Leeds.

Granted, the situation at Elland Road is not their fault but at this point, it certainly looks as if the Yorkshire club was the wrong place to send him.

What Clarke needs now is regular first-team football. He was a bit-part player for Leeds last season and an extended run in the side could be fantastic for his game.

The EFL rule may be part of the issue but if Bielsa deemed him good enough, the 18-year-old would be starting over fellow on-loan winger Jack Harrison, which makes you question whether he would play for a top-flight side.

Sending him to a Premier League club risks another half-season of limited opportunities, which is surely not what would be best for the player at this point.

It will certainly be tempting for the North London side to send him to another top-flight side to see how he fares in the division but you have to question the chances he is going to get.

Would Clarke not benefit much more from an extended run in a Championship side?

In Dele Alli, Spurs have seen first-hand how beneficial regular first-team football in the lower leagues can be for a player and you have to think that multiple clubs below the Premier League would be queuing up for him.

The decision in January could be an important point in the teenager’s development and it is key that Spurs avoid making the same mistake again.
