Swansea City can now start looking ahead to next season after their late play-off surge ground to a halt at the weekend.

Graham Potter’s side surrendered a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 against Hull City to leave them seven points adrift of the top six with just two games remaining.

The Swans have had a mixed campaign, but they had produced a solid run of five wins in six games to give themselves an outside chance of a top six finish.

But with this now coming to an end, Swansea must begin planning their summer transfer activity to ensure they have a squad capable of sustaining a promotion push next season.

However, it appears one key man may not feature in Potter’s plans next season as his contract comes to an end.

Leroy Fer has seen his season cut short with a knee injury, having barely featured for the Swans in 2019. This means he could have played his last game for the club with his contract set to expire in the summer.

The Dutchman was handed the club’s captaincy last year, but he’s only featured in 25 of Swansea’s 44 matches this season. As a result of this limited contribution, Fer will now feel his days in Wales are numbered as the club cannot afford to continue funding his relatively high wages.

This feeling will be exacerbated by Potter’s comments yesterday where he expressed his uncertainty over Fer’s future.

"He has been our captain and has led well, but I'm sure he would say he hasn't been on the pitch as much as he would have liked,” Potter told BBC.

"We have to take the decisions on what is best for the future and so does he."

These comments indicate Potter is resigned to the possibility of losing Fer, but this would not be a massive blow for the club as the likes of George Byers, Matt Grimes and Jay Fulton have proved able deputies for the Dutchman.

So, whilst the former Feyenoord man will be missed, those others have shown they can step up and it seems like Fer's expected departure could suit all parties.
