Fans of Barnsley could not have been blamed for getting carried away earlier in the season.

The Tykes occupied the higher positions in The Sky Bet Championship for several months, and it seemed for a while that the Yorkshire club would be competing for a top six finish.

Alas, it was not to be, and Barnsley have slid down the league table to 14th position with two games to go.

Barnsley suffered the curse many of the smaller budget sides in the division succumb to, when their top scorer, Sam Winnall, was snapped up by local rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the January transfer window.

Midfield maestro, Conor Hourihane was also sold to Aston Villa, and within days, the Tykes had lost their two best players.

With another season of Championship football to look forward to, manager Paul Heckingbottom will already be preparing for next season.

Fans will hope for progression, and a sustained play off push will surely be on the wish list of the Oakwell faithful.

A relegation battle is also very possible, and Heckingbottom will hope it is the former, and not the latter that his side will experience next year.

Barnsley need another goal scorer to take the pressure off current top scorer, winger Marley Watkins, and one man to do so may be honing his skills in the league below.

Scunthorpe’s Ivan Toney is on loan from Newcastle, and the frontman has really found his feet in North Lincolnshire.

Linking up with the Iron in January, the 21-year-old has notched 12 League One goals during the course of the season, after playing the first half of the campaign in Shropshire with Shrewsbury Town.

Toney is proving himself in League One, and will next season be ready to make the step up to the Championship.

Newcastle will be promoted this year and will struggle to find space for the youngster in their squad, so a move to Barnsley will be ideal for all parties.

We have already seen one Premier League loanee light up the league this year in Tammy Abraham, could Toney be the next Premier League youngster to find his feet in the Championship?
