Bristol Rovers have enjoyed a great year back in League One.

Successive promotions have seen the Gas rise from the depths of The National League to the verge of the League One play-off spots, and the Bristol club will only just miss out on the end of season shoot out.

The club have been pushing for a top six spot all season, and their form in the league convinced Stoke defender, Ryan Sweeney, to join the club on loan until the end of the season.

London born, but an Irish Under-21 international, Sweeney signed for Stoke last summer in a deal from AFC Wimbledon, and the player has impressed during his 16 games in the South West.

Only 20 years of age, Sweeney has been playing above his years in the tough environment of the English third division, but has more than held his own at a very competitive level.

The youngster is held in extremely high regard by those at Stoke City, and fans have been closely following the progression of Sweeney at Bristol Rovers.

So much in fact, that there have been whisperings that the player should be elevated to the first team squad next season.

Mark Hughes will be more aware than any as to Sweeney’s potential, and the Stoke City manager should retain the player for next year’s Premier League campaign.

The youngster would offer a fantastic back up option to the starting defensive pair of Ryan Shawcross and Bruno Martins Indi.

With Shawcross being linked with a potential move away from the club, Hughes may feel that he has no need to delve into the over inflated transfer market.

Sweeney has a lot of potential, and should without a doubt be in Mark Hughes’ squad next season.
