Doncaster Rovers go into their play-off semi-final second leg against Charlton tonight knowing they must do what no side has managed thus far this year; beat the Addicks on their home turf.

The last side to come away with anything from the Valley was Doncaster, back at the beginning of December in the FA Cup.

Since then Lee Bowyer’s side have been a relentless force at home and have now won eight of their last nine fixtures.

It’s widely expected they’ll eliminate the brave Doncaster side, although having seen Derby’s win against Leeds on Wednesday night, nothing is certain. With John Marquis leading the line, Doncaster have lots of goals in them, if they are on form.

One player who has shone for Rovers this season is Leeds United youngster Mallik Wilks. He’s been on a season-long loan at the Keepmoat and whilst his exploits in front of goal haven’t been as eye-catching as Marquis, his all-round play has helped them to their top six placement.

The 20-year-old scored 16 goals in 53 matches across all competitions and has certainly proven himself to be a top player at League One level.

With Leeds failing to earn promotion, it’s highly likely that he’ll be given a chance to prove himself at Elland Road, especially given his performances.

He needed experience of the senior game to push on and reach his potential and he’s done just that. He’s grown as a player through the season and doesn’t look out of place at the very top of League One.

That’s why Doncaster must prioritise a return for him next season. Marquis is likely to leave and his will be hugely shoes to fill, but if they could retain the services of the Leeds loanee it might soften the blow somewhat.

With a year of senior football behind him, it’s apparent that Wilks is going to have a good future in the game. He’s alert, quick and adjusts well to the different challenges faced In League One.

Much depends on whether Leeds will be willing to part with him or not, but his interests are not best served playing Under 23 football.

If Doncaster can go back in for him in the summer, he might just put them back in the top six next season, with or without Marquis.
