Charlton Athletic bounced back from their crushing defeat to Bristol City in midweek by securing an impressive 2-2 draw against league leaders West Brom at The Hawthorns.

Matt Phillips had given West Brom an early lead in the first half before Macauley Bonne's equaliser after the break, and Hal Robson-Kanu then gave Albion the lead in the 81st minute but Josh Cullen scored a late penalty to secure a point for Lee Bowyer's side.

The Charlton boss made five changes from his side's 2-1 defeat away at Bristol City during the week, and one of these saw attacking midfielder Erhun Oztumer earn just his fourth start of the season after joining from Bolton back in August.

The 28-year-old can owe his re-inclusion to an injury suffered by Jonny Williams last weekend which has ruled the Welsh international out for two months, and Oztumer may now have an opportunity to establish himself in the Charlton side.

He produced a skilful performance in the second-striker role behind Macauley Bonne in the Addicks' attack, as he consistently looked threatening going forward and showed excellent bravery as he aimed to make an impression on his rare opportunity.

Oztumer's infrequent appearances in the Charlton side could be owed to fitness issues in the early part of the season, but he should now be at a level where he is able to contribute regularly to his side amid their growing list of injuries.

The former Bolton man would have been aware of this heading into his appearance at The Hawthorns, and he subsequently delivered a simple but effective performance where he proved to Bowyer that he can be trusted in a key role in this Charlton side.

His performance would have also left Charlton fans itching to see even more from their summer signing, it is clear that he could cause real damage against some of the lower-placed sides in the division.

It will be interesting to see whether Bowyer includes Oztumer in the starting line-up for the clash with Preston next weekend. This would be the first time he has started back-to-back matches this term, and it would also be a clear indication of whether Bowyer has marked him down as Williams' like-for-like replacement over the next two months.
