Following the unsurprising promotion of Newcastle United to the Premier League, they're now being linked with former defender Davide Santon but here is why the club and player shouldn't meet again.

Back in 2015, Italian full-back Davide Santon departed St. James' Park and decided to return to his home land as the 26-year-old signed for European giants Inter Milan, and it's fair to say the international has impressed in Serie A.

However, with the Magpies rumoured to swoop in the ex-player, I don't think it would be suitable for the two to meet ends and have a reunion.

Santon had potential to fulfil on Tyneside but it never really went to plan for him so to get a fresh start he opted to move to southern Europe, where the defender has flourished and become a firm fan favourite in northern Italy.

Rated at £4.68 million, it would be a terrible acquisition by manager Rafa Benitez if the Spaniard did go through with the signing.

Newcastle United need to keep hold of their current core of the squad having just gained promotion to the top-flight and it would be wrong to alter the team for change's sake.

Also, Davide Santon didn't thrive in his initial spell at the club and, whatever the reason may be, it may be the English football factor that resulted in him struggling to settle down in the north-east.

It would be an atrocious way to spend the transfer budget Benitez will be given and that money could be used more wisely elsewhere.

If the boss is looking for a new right-back then I think he should aim to acquire current loanee DeAndre Yedlin on a permanent basis.
