Bristol City saw their four-game winning run come to a crashing end on Friday evening as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Birmingham City.

Lee Johnson's side had stepped up their play-off bid in the lead-up to this loss at Ashton Gate, which means the setback would have been even more frustrating for Robins supporters who saw their side blow a first-minute lead against the Blues.

Jamie Paterson has put the south-west club in front before goals from Scott Hogan and Lukas Jutkiewicz either side of Andreas Weimann's own goal settled the outcome of the clash which has seen City drop out of the top six.

The Robins are now sitting seventh in the Championship table as they prepare for their clash with Derby on Wednesday evening, and there will be one man itching to make his first start for Johnson's side against the Rams.

Nahki Wells has made two substitute appearances since his arrival at the club in the final week of the January transfer window, but the frontman has not been given enough of an opportunity to showcase the full extent of his abilities.

The 29-year-old attracted City's attention following his impressive form for his loan club QPR this season where he netted 13 goals in 26 Championship games, and he will now be determined to replicate this form for his new permanent club.

Therefore, it is now the right time for Johnson to include Wells in the starting line-up. He can be excused for not including the Bermuda international until now following City's fine form in recent weeks, but the Birmingham defeat means a change is now required.

Wells can add both goalscoring ability and an element of liveliness to City's attacking unit, while his record this term already suggests that Johnson has one of the most dependable frontmen in the Championship at his disposal.

It seems logical for Wells to partner Famara Diedhiou up top for the Ashton Gate side, particularly seeing as these two players could prove to compliment each other well given their varied styles of play.

Wells' inclusion in the starting line-up would also give the Ashton Gate crowd a much-needed lift following the disappointment of the Birmingham defeat, and the striker could thrive off this energy in his first start for the club.

Johnson's decision to not include Wells in the side can be understood across the last two matches, but he now has no excuse to not give him the nod.
