Richie Wellens is looking likely to be a busy man this summer.

He’s on the warpath, blasting his players after their recent defeat and throwing threats around about next season every other day.

He’s targeting a big clear out in the summer, with plenty of changes expected at the County Ground. Whilst it might sound like a lot of upheaval, fans are sure to be excited by what they hear.

One player who would seem safe is Kyle Bennett, the on-loan Bristol Rovers midfielder. He’s a former teammate of Wellens and he’s already stated he wants to stay with the club. He’s been a solid performer too and if the same quality of player is attracted in the summer, there’s a lot to be excited about.

Swindon shouldn’t be a League Two club, not based on their stature and previous history. Phil Brown couldn’t put them near the top seven and lost his job as a result, but Wellens is aiming to go one better.

He understands the division, he spent most of his playing days in the lower reaches of the Football League and in that time, he met a lot of players he knows he can trust. He’s seen success at this level, he knows what it looks like and if he can put his ideas across then the club will be better for it.

A manager is only as good as his players and whilst it would seem like Swindon have a strong squad, Wellens feels otherwise. Whether the problem is attitude or application is anyone’s guess, but the gaffer doesn’t like what he’s seen.

Sometimes, fans like a no-nonsense attitude, if it’s backed up with action. Sweeping the decks and starting again is all well and good if they get it right, but if they bring in poor players then it’s a route to serious trouble.

Swindon fans will have seen enough of Wellens, his manner and his approach, to know that he’s focused and driven. If Bennet is anything to go by, his recruitment is sound and that should have them excited for the future.
