Sunderland must play without fear at Wembley if they are to gain promotion to the Championship.

The Black Cats booked their place in the League One play-off final after a 0-0 draw was enough to give them a 1-0 aggregate victory over Portsmouth.

This means they will face either Charlton or Doncaster who play their second-leg tie tonight. The Addicks have a 2-1 aggregate lead after victory at Donny on Sunday and their impressive home form makes them the favourites to face Sunderland on 26 May.

If it is Sunderland vs Charlton at Wembley it will be a re-run of the 1998 Division One play-off final which ended in a 4-4 draw before Charlton won 7-6 on penalties.

This will be the Black Cats' second trip to Wembley this year after they lost on penalties to Portsmouth in the Checkatrade trophy final last March. Manager Jack Ross will be keen to avenge his side's Wembley demons but he must make sure they use that defeat as motivation instead of letting it be an added pressure.

Sunderland went into the play-offs off the back of two defeats and many people thought they could struggle as a result. However, Ross' men fought hard to secure what they needed at Fratton Park on Thursday night and they must show the same determination at Wembley.

While there is still every chance it could be Doncaster the Black Cats face in the final, if it is Charlton then Sunderland would likely be the underdogs due to the form the Addicks showed towards the end of the season. This may suit Ross' team as it may take off the pressure of returning to the Championship at the first time of asking.

When the Black Cats do take to the Wembley pitch once more, they must believe they can win the game. Thursday night's draw was Sunderland's 20th of the season and it's for that reason they missed out on the automatic promotion places. Ross will look to his key men to produce the goals and magic to get them back to the Championship. Sunderland have overcome their rocky end to the League One season and now must take their belief into the final against either Charlton or Doncaster.
