An enormous feeling of relief must have been felt by anyone connected to Birmingham City on Sunday as the club secured Championship status.

Possibly the worst precedent ever set by a band of new owners was shown by Trillion Trophy Asia group, who took over the club in October and sacked manager Gary Rowett within a month, despite the club pushing for a play-off place.

Their fall from grace has been one of the stories of this EFL season, as Gianfranco Zola was appointed as his replacement who proceeded to win just two games in a disastrous spell.

He was then ditched for Harry Redknapp, who managed to squeeze two wins out of the Blues and guide them to safety.

Cleary Redknapp, or whoever is in charge of Birmingham next season, has an enormous job on his hands over the summer in overhauling the squad and bringing in the right names to put Birmingham back amongst the play off contenders.

One of the issues he may need to address is goals, as the club's top scorer this season is Lukas Jutkiewicz with 12, a pretty mild total.

He's followed up by Che Adams and Clayton Donaldson, who have just seven and six goals respectively.

A player the Blues should be eyeing up is Joseph Mendes of Reading, who was brought into the club last summer from Le Havre.

Mendes failed to start a league game up until April, and when he did he exploded onto the scene with a brace, the first of which came within six minutes of the game starting.

His second start came against Burton Albion over the weekend, and once again, he scored.

Mendes now has the best goal-per-minute ratio of any player in the Championship.

He looks such a force.

His work rate is unbelievable, he's quick, he's extremely strong and he's shown how clinical he can be.

This boy wants to play football, too, which could open a door for him to leave.

And with Yann Kermorgant turning on the style in 2017 to cruise to 18 goals, whether Reading go up or not, Mendes may be confided to play second - or even third - fiddle next season, dependent on whether another striker is brought in.

This could be a very, very shrewd and clever signing from the Blues, as Mendes could be an absolute sensation for them.
