Why Sheffield Wednesday need to release influential figure ahead of rebuild this summer

Sheffield Wednesday are sure to have a big overhaul in the summer as Jos Luhukay looks to build a squad that is capable of challenging for promotion.

The former Gladbach boss took over at Hillsborough in January and whilst he has had to contend with a ridiculous injury list, there have been very few positive signs.

Therefore, he is likely to be ruthless in the summer, with many players departing and one of those could be influential defender Glenn Loovens.

The ex-Celtic centre-back has been at the Yorkshire club for five years, however he has struggled this season, playing 19 times but he has been sent off twice.

As our graphic shows, the 34-year old is still very competent when it comes to out and out defending, such as tackling and clearing however that doesn’t highlight the troubles he has because of a lack of pace, which caused the red cards against Sheffield United and Derby.

Additionally, to compensate for that, the Owls defence has to sit deeper when he is in the side, which in turn invites pressure and means they can’t press from the front.

Of course, Loovens still has something to offer to the younger players and his leadership qualities cannot be underestimated but the reality is that the Owls have better defenders at the club already.

With Luhukay looking to implement major changes at Wednesday in the summer it would make sense to let Loovens go as the Owls look to rebuild.
