Sheffield Wednesday are in an unusual position now, where the focus will already be on building for next season.

They are in no danger of going down and the gap to the play-offs is realistically too big as well, so Steve Bruce will spend the next few months experimenting.

That was the case on Tuesday night, when the new Owls chief decided to use the influential Barry Bannan on the left flank.

However, it didn't work at all, with Bruce acknowledging that when speaking to the Sheffield Star afterwards.

He revealed that he won't move Bannan out of a central midfield role in the future and that should be music to the ears of the Scot, who has to play in that position.

The former Aston Villa man has spent too much of his career playing in various positions just because he can do a job.

At 29-years-old he is at his peak and he needs to be the main man in the team moving forward - which means he should be one of the players the side is built around in the middle of the park.

Even just two weeks into the role Bruce's comments suggest he recognises that and that should give Bannan the confidence and the platform to thrive.

He has great technique and a real ability on the ball that allows him to dictate the tempo when he's at his best.

It's now down to Bruce to help the playmaker get to his highest level as he should be one of the main man for what could be a new-look Sheffield Wednesday side next season.
