Why Rowett must look to bring this £2.98m-rated midfield star to Derby

Derby County will be hoping that Gary Rowett can be the man to lead them back to the Premier League next season.

The former Birmingham and Burton chief replaced the sacked Steve McClaren back in March to become the club’s third manager of the campaign, with Nigel Pearson also losing his job at the iPro Stadium earlier on in the term.

Nonetheless, Rowett led the side to four wins from his nine Championship games in charge to secure a ninth place finish in the division, although the East Midlands outfit will look to bridge that 13-point gap to the top six in a bid to sustain a promotion push.

And it’s clear that reinforcements may well be needed over the summer if they are to do just that, which is why a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley could be a wise one.

The 30-year-old will leave Selhurst Park this summer at the expiration of his contract, which will bring the curtain down on a three-year stay at the London club, in which time he appeared 96 times for the Eagles, netting six goals.

And his likely desire to play first team football, both to keep his club and international career going, alongside his midfield dynamism and experience of the Championship makes him a perfect addition to Rowett’s squad at Derby.

The 73-capped Welsh international has played 227 times at second tier level during his career, all with Cardiff City, and in that time scored 26 goals and laid on 19 assists for the Bluebirds.

And although those stats aren’t exactly startling, it’s what else Ledley brings, midfield dynamism, guile, and a willingness to defend and break up play, which would be invaluable to Derby next term.

And having several quality midfield options available is integral over the course of a Championship season, especially those like Ledley who are tenacious, who work hard for the team, and who are strong both on and off the ball.

Ultimately, the 30-year-old was an excellent Championship player for Cardiff between 2004 and 2010, hence he earned a move to Scottish giants Celtic that summer, and it’s arguable that he has improved his all round game since then as his experience and know-how began to grow.

It’s worth remembering that just 12 months ago Ledley played a pivotal role in helping Wales reach the semi-finals of the European Championships, and although he only made 13 starts for Palace last term, the quality is clearly still there.

Whether he would be open to dropping down to the Championship remains to be seen, but for the better of his career at both club and international level, it could be his only and thus most viable option.

Consequently, Rowett should seriously consider offering the £2.98 million-rated midfielder (as per Transfermarkt) a contract to move to the iPro Stadium, as the Rams seek to finally return to the promised land next term.
