Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to tie down goalkeeper Keiren Westwood to a new contract at Hillsborough.

That is the word from defender Liam Palmer, who thinks it “would be great” if the Owls could do just that, according to the Sheffield Star.

Westwood has had a strange season, being marginalised and frozen out by former boss Jos Luhukay before Lee Bullen restored him to the first team where he has stayed ever since the appointment of Steve Bruce.

The former Republic of Ireland international is a fans’ favourite at the Championship club and is out of contract in the summer.

The 34-year-old has kept ten clean sheets in 17 games and has been a big reason for the Owls’ current unbeaten run of 12 matches, putting them on the verge of a late play-off push.

With that said, should Sheffield Wednesday give Westwood a new deal?

We asked our team of FLW writers, and here’s what they had to say…

Jay Taylor

“I think he is worth another deal, for sure.

“Having been an outcast for most of the season before returning to the side, it shows how important he is to the Owls’ team.

“Keepers have a longer lifespan in the game, and at 34, Westwood still has many years ahead of him.

It would be a mistake to let him go in the summer.”

Toby Wilding

"Since returning to the Wednesday starting XI under Steve Bruce, Westwood's form has again been impressive.

"It is hard to see them finding many better options available, so it would make sense to tie Westwood to Hillsborough long term.”

Louie Chandler

“I don't think so.

“He is in his 30s now so any long-term deal would be a financial risk from Wednesday's point of view.

“They really are not in a position to be doing so.”

George Harbey

"Why not?

"He has been tremendous since his return to the team, keeping a load of clean sheets.

"Age is just a number for him."
