Norwich City will be one of many clubs entering the 2017/18 Championship season with a new manager at the helm.
The Canaries sacked Alex Neil back in March after overseeing a woeful run of form, a run which all but ended their hopes of achieving promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Alan Irvine took over on an interim basis and led the club to eighth in the table, but it will be up to new boss Daniel Farke to lead the Norfolk-based outfit into the new second tier campaign, which will start on the weekend of August 5.
And based on their shortcomings last season, the former Borussia Dortmund II chief may have to delve into the transfer market to improve his squad and thus try to bridge that ten-point gap to the top six.
And one man he could look to bring in over the summer is Newcastle United star Vurnon Anita, who will be released by the Magpies at the end of the month.
The 28-year-old moved to St James’ Park all the way back in 2012 and went on to make 148 appearances for the North East giants, of which 106 were in the Premier League.
However, his contract has not been renewed by the top tier-bound side, which surely represents an opportunity for Farke to bring in a vital and experienced squad member to Carrow Road this summer.
And given his immense versatility, and the huge turnover of defenders at Norwich this summer, it would be a very shrewd move indeed if the Canaries boss were to land Anita.
The 28-year-old moved to England as a midfielder back in 2012, but has since developed into an accomplished full-back, as well as maintaining his level as both a defensive midfielder and one who also plays a more standard central role.
In fact, the Dutch international deputised impressively at right-back for Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle last term to help them achieve promotion to the top-flight, and with even a few appearances down the right side of midfield, it’s clear that he is a player who can be trusted to perform in a variety of roles.
And when you consider that right-back Steven Whittaker, as well as other defensive options Sebastien Bassong, Ryan Bennett, and Michael Turner, won’t be getting new deals at Carrow Road, Farke’s defensive options are going to be somewhat depleted.
And add in that fact that they conceded a staggering 69 goals last season, not only do they need to reinforce in that department, but they need to reinforce wisely if they are to sustain a promotion push.
No side in the last ten seasons of the Championship has been promoted conceding more than 64 goals in a campaign, and with many set to leave the club, it appears that Farke is building from the bottom in a bid to shore up his leaky backline.
And that’s where the experienced and accomplished Anita could prove hugely beneficial to the Norwich boss, as his displays at right-back last term in a side which won the division cannot be overlooked.
Add in the experience he gained from being part of a team that achieved promotion, and Anita could be an asset to Farke next term, and thus Norwich should look to get a deal done for the £3.4 million-rated Dutch ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
