Middlesbrough are on the lookout for a new boss after Tony Pulis left after failing to reach the play-offs, with Slavisa Jokanovic set to be interviewed for the vacancy.

That's according to Sky Sports, who claim talks will begin in the next day with the Serb, who has won promotion from the second-tier with Watford and Fulham in the past.

Whilst that already makes him an appealing candidate, Boro fans will love this latest link because it represents a complete change in direction in terms of philosophy and approach - a change that is desperately needed.

Firstly, you have to say that Pulis is clearly a very effective manager and he will rightly be proud of his excellent record in the game.

However, when he doesn't bring huge success, his style of play can be very hard for fans to watch. And, that's what happened at the Riverside.

Finishing seventh in the Championship is not a disaster. It's a league renowned around the world for being competitive and around two thirds of the 24 teams will have promotion hopes.

Yet, finishing seventh as Boro did was a disaster. They scored fewer goals than relegated Rotherham and averaged just one goal a game at home all season.

Fans may accept that if it results in promotion, but it didn't, meaning supporters of the Teesside outfit have endured 12 months to forget on the whole.

That's why they will welcome Jokanovic with open arms. The side he built at Fulham in particular was the complete opposite to the Boro side under Pulis.

They played out from the back, stretched teams, had pace in attack and always looked to win by playing on the front foot.

Of course, the 50-year-old may need time to implement that style in the north-east and it could take a few transfer windows but it would at least be enjoyable for the fans whilst that transformation happens.

It's the appointment that Middlesbrough need and if they can agree a deal with Jokanovic then there could be a bright future ahead for the club after a dull few years.
