Danny Hylton has become something of a legend in Luton over the past couple of seasons.

His goals have helped cover the loss of Jack Marriott, then they fired the club to promotion after finishing second in League Two last season.

He’s a tough character, never far away from controversy and always happy to wind up opposition players and fans. He’s the type of striker you love to have on your team, but love to hate when he’s lining up against you.

There’s little doubt of the forward’s talents, he’s scored goals for almost every club he’s been with, but has often struggled to make the transition from League Two to League One. He’s the lower level version of Dwight Gayle or Lewis Grabban, too good for one division and perhaps just a little shy of the requirement in the other.

Luton fans won’t hear a thing against him though and as he sits out the end to their season, there’s surely a need for him in the side. Kazenga Lua Lua hasn’t got the same instinct for goals and as a result, the Hatters have struggled to get over the line.

Assuming promotion is clinched this weekend, which it should be, the future must look very uncertain for Hylton. He’s an asset in League One and Two, but the Championship would surely be a step too far. Thanks to his injury-hit season, he hasn’t been able to prove his worth as confidently at Kenilworth Road this campaign.

He’s surely going to have one eye on the next option, the next side he can impact with his goals at this level. There must be a desire to remain in League One, but surely that’s going to be the ceiling for his aspirations.

There will be no shortage of takers, clubs coming up from the basement division will have seen him first hand and would surely be open to talks, as well as several teams who have struggled this season.

The pathway Danny Hylton might take is uncertain, but he’s surely resigned to a summer exit from Luton Town.
