Leeds United have still not put a contract on the table for Kemar Roofe to sign, even though he is entering the final year of his current deal.

Given he was the Whites top scorer this season and is key into implementing the style of play Marcelo Bielsa demands with his relentless work-rate, it's a very strange decision from the club.

However, the report from the Yorkshire Evening Post that revealed the news may give an insight into why no offer has been forthcoming, as they suggest Roofe will demand similar money to Patrick Bamford, making him a top earner at Elland Road.

Yet, the former Oxford man has every right to do that and is justified in wanting a similar wage.

Quite simply, his contributions to the team have been greater than Bamford's over the past year and he merits a contract that reflects his importance to the team.

Whether the club feel that Roofe isn't worth the figures he will want is open to debate but Leeds have clearly put themselves in a very difficult position if they've made Bamford the top earner.

That's not to say the striker has been a complete failure - he actually has a very respectable goal return, however there are many other key players at Elland Road who will argue they, justifiably, warrant a similar deal.

You only have to look at Leeds' bitter rivals Manchester United to see what sort of problems that this can cause.

But, there could be bigger issues facing the Yorkshire club if they can't agree a new contract with their 15-goal man, as they may end up losing him on the cheap or even for free in 12 months.

So, it's an issue that needs sorting and most fans would surely agree the obvious solution is to give the 26-year-old a deal that proves how valued he is at the club - which is certainly as much as Bamford!

Of course, Leeds can't just let the players rule but it's poor that they're in this situation and it needs rectifying swiftly.
