Derby County went into the international break on the back of a five-game unbeaten run that has lifted the mood around Pride Park after what had been a tough first few months of the season.

Whilst Phillip Cocu has made a few tweaks to his tactical approach in the previous weeks, many will point to the inclusion of Chris Martin as a crucial moment in helping turn things around.

The target man didn't even make the matchday squad until the Rams ninth game of the season in all competitions and he has gone on to play five times since - grabbing three goals.

So, he is in good form and has come from nowhere to be the main man right now.

Therefore, he will be somewhat disappointed to see that the Rams are believed to be one of several Championship sides monitoring Hearts striker Uche Ikpeazu - according to West London Sport.

Even though competition for places is a given at any big club at this level, it's an area Derby are already well-stocked, with Martyn Waghorn, Mason Bennett and Jack Marriott all options for Cocu along with the Scotsman.

And, the worrying thing for Martin is that Ikpeazu would be a like-for-like replacement for him.

The 24-year-old's game is all about his strength and how he can bring others into play with his back to goal - qualities that Martin has.

Quite simply, there is no way that the duo will play together and you would imagine that if the former Cambridge man did arrive at Pride Park then he would take Martin's place in the squad over the long-term.

Of course, Martin's current form means he has to stay involved but if a replacement is lined up then it suggests that Cocu doesn't have confidence that his striker can maintain these recent levels.

The fact he froze the ex-Norwich man out of his squad for the first few months may also be playing on Martin's mind. Players will often want to feel loved at their clubs and this speculation won't convince Martin that he has a future under the Dutch coach.

Alternatively, some may argue that this report will ensure the 30-year-old stays on his toes to ensure he doesn't lose his place but it's a risky call.

Ultimately, it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming months and Martin's form between now and the New Year will determine his future, however it would be a knock to his confidence if Derby are planning to replace him after his recent showings.
