Jacob Murphy has come under fire yet again from sections of his own support after a lacklustre display against Aston Villa this weekend.

The on-loan Newcastle star missed a good chance to put his side 1-0 up during the encounter at Villa Park, which has drawn some criticism on social media.

The 23-year-old might be regretting his move to the Baggies, despite the chance to get first team football and develop his game after stagnating at Newcastle.

Murphy serves as a warning for all exciting young players in the Championship. He got his big-money move to Newcastle after impressing at Norwich, but a lack of game time has left him lagging behind in terms of development.

The chance of regular Championship football with the Baggies will surely have been attractive, but a couple of games into his current placement and he might be regretting the move. It's not just that he's struggled to find form, nor that he missed a couple of chances, but that the Harvey Barnes comparisons keep on coming.

Every time he misses a chance, or fails to place a pass, the groans indicate fans thinking 'Barnes would have scored that,' or 'Barnes would have made that pass'. Murphy is living in a world where his every move is compared to a special talent recalled in the summer.

When the switch first came up he doubtless would have been excited by the chance, a promotion-chasing side playing football the right way. He would have foreseen chances being created by the plethora of talent they have up front and perhaps seen his own crosses being converted by those same players.

Instead, he's a standalone product, not part of the forward line in fans' eyes but very much a simple replacement for Barnes. That's placed unnecessary expectation on his shoulders and far from being given time to settle, he's already being barracked by the fans meant to encourage him.

You have to wonder if the cold light of this Sunday morning has Jacob Murphy regretting leaving the safety of the Newcastle United bench.
