Given the mixed reaction to his appointment, Paul Heckingbottom won’t have enjoyed the fact he has been handed an extremely tough start to life as Leeds manager.

The ex-Barnsley boss lost his first game in charge of the Whites last week with Sheffield United emerging victorious in a Yorkshire derby at Bramall Lane.

This afternoon, things don’t get much easier, with high-flying Bristol City coming to Elland Road in what should be a cracking encounter.

And, if that wasn’t bad enough, the four games following that are against Derby, Brentford, Middlesbrough and Wolves in what is a very difficult start for Heckingbottom.

However, it is vital that the 40-year old gets some wins in that time just to generate optimism around the club.

As mentioned, his appointment brought a mixed response and the only way to ease any doubts are by getting wins on the board.

If that doesn’t happen it can create a negative atmosphere around Elland Road that could quickly create extra pressure for both the manager and the players.

Whilst the play-offs look a long way away this season, there’s no doubt that Heckingbottom’s aim for the next campaign will be a top six finish and to do that he will need everyone pulling in the same direction.

The Leeds fans will respond to what they see on the pitch and can play a pivotal role in any promotion push because of their passionate backing and big numbers.

Even if the play-offs look unlikely this season, it’s crucial that Heckingbottom doesn’t allow negativity to surround the club which means that a good start is vital to prove his credentials in such a demanding and high-profile role.

So, navigating his way through this challenging next month could play a big part in his reign with the Whites.
