Huddersfield Town have been the unexpected force in the Championship this season.

Despite being brushed aside by early media predictions, David Wagner's side have maintained a real push for promotion throughout the year and thoroughly deserve their place in the play-off final.

Now just one match stands between Huddersfield and the Premier League.

They face Reading on bank holiday Monday with the winner set to take away the lucrative prize of playing top flight football among the country's elite while second place is consigned to another year in the Championship.

If Huddersfield do go up, Wagner will very quickly need to turn his attention to strengthening his squad.

Huddersfield have a core of good players but their squad would struggle in the Premier League and he needs to add some quality faces to his options to ensure the Terriers would have the best chance of survival.

One position which needs looking at is the goalkeeper.

Danny Ward is Wagner's first choice stopper and the Wales international was the hero in the play-off semi-final, saving a penalty to send Huddersfield to Wembley.

But he is only on loan from Liverpool and it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp would sanction a permanent move or another loan.

Huddersfield should instead look at bringing back Alex Smithies.

Smithies played a pivotal role in keeping QPR up this season with his tremendous performances between the sticks.

The 27-year-old was born in Huddersfield, raised as a Huddersfield fan and played over 250 senior games for Huddersfield.

He would surely long for a return if his boyhood club reach the Premier League and the Terriers do need a goalkeeper.
