Middlesbrough completed their third signing of the summer yesterday, bringing in free agent Andy Lonergan in on a one-year deal.

The former Leeds United goalkeeper joins Paddy McNair and Aden Flint at the Riverside, as Tony Pulis looks to build a squad that can go a few steps better than last seasons play-off semi-final defeat and win promotion.

Lonergan has made nearly 400 appearances throughout his career with 335 coming in the second tier through spells at Wolves, Leeds United, Fulham, Bolton and Preston North End.

He only made seven appearances last season for the Whites and will most likely only be involved as back up to Darren Randolph.

Boro are one of the favourites in the division for promotion this season, having retained the majority of their squad from last season.

But will Lonergan prove a good signing as they chase this goal?

We discuss...

Jay Taylor

Not at all.

They don’t need another keeper and a journeyman of a player at that.

It is an odd signing that does not make sense to anyone other than Tony Pulis.

He might fit with the Boro boss’ philosophy but I don’t see the point. Waste of wages.

Gary Hutchinson

I'm not really sure why, they have three keepers, two of which I think are Championship standard and I can't see why Lonergan wants to spend ninety minutes a week sat next to Tony Pulis.

I certainly wouldn't.

George Dagless

It's gotten a lot of stick but I do sort of understand it.

He won't play every game and has made mistakes in the past but he is an experienced player at this level and also has been a top performer for the likes of Preston.

It's not that silly.

Jay Williams

This is a dreadful signing - why have they done this?

With Darren Randolph as first-choice and back-up options of Dimi Konstantopoulos and Connor Ripley, it really baffles me that they'd sign Lonergan.

The former Leeds man was awful at Elland Road last season and is simply not at the level Boro should be aiming for.

Chris Gallagher

What's the point?

They already have a decent set of keepers at the club and Lonergan is not an upgrade. It seems a waste of money, surely there is a kid who could be the number three this season.
