Millwall will likely have come away from their game on Saturday feeling that, while a draw against seventh-place Bristol City is a good result, they could and maybe should have come away with a win.

It was another frustrating afternoon in the final third where they were unable to show enough quality to take three points, however, the performance of one man, Matt Smith, was particularly promising.

The Robins dominated the opening 20 minutes and took a deserved early lead through Pedro Pereira but they faded and the Lions were allowed to take control of the game.

Smith played a role in the Lions' equaliser just after the break and wave after wave of Millwall attacks followed but, as has so often been the case in the last few weeks, they were unable to find the net and secure a win.

It was far from a fantastic afternoon for Millwall's attacking players but the 30-year-old proved a nuisance for the City backline for the 77 minutes he was on the pitch–hinting at why he could be key against the Reds.

Gary Rowett has had a fantastic impact since taking charge of the club and the fact they're part of the play-off conversation is, in itself, hugely impressive.

However, it is impossible to ignore the goal drought in recent weeks. The Lions have scored just three goals in their last seven games and have won just once in that period.

They now face a trip to the City Ground to play fourth-place Nottingham Forest in what looks to be a tough test.

Rowett will likely be scheming how best to get past Joe Worrall and co. on Saturday and keeping the faith with Smith could be key.

The striker has started back-to-back Championship games just once since the turn of the year but allowing him to reprise his role against the Reds could be integral to their success and it is nothing short of what he deserves.

Smith was fantastic against the Robins, his former employers. According to Wyscout, the 30-year-old won 11 of his 16 aerial duels (not easy against Tomas Kalas and Nathan Baker), hit the target with 75% of his attempts, and was integral in their equaliser–which was eventually given as a Kalas own-goal.

He was an excellent outlet during City's early dominance and helped Millwall gain some control in the game with his hold-up play.

That will, without doubt, come in useful against a Forest side that are likely to be in the ascendancy but some aspects of the Reds' 2-2 draw last night suggest he could be key in helping them secure three points.

Rudy Gestede is a striker with a similar build and playing style to Smith and last night, Sabri Lamouchi's backline struggled to deal with him.

As well as finding the net with a close-range header, Gestede won 13 aerial duels, took six touches in the Forest box, made five interceptions and provided one shot assist (Wyscout).

Given their similarities, you feel Smith could play the same role against the Reds and could be key to helping the Lions get a result.

Rowett has tinkered with his forward line a lot recently, with Smith, Tom Bradshaw, and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson sharing the number nine role but he should keep the faith with the former on Saturday.
