Reading have had a poor start to the season after losing both of their opening fixtures to Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City.

After the Royals were defeated by the Owls on the first day of the season, José Gomes and his recruitment team decided to delve into the club's pockets the following week.

The club brought in midfielders Tuncana Gomes (Pelé) and Ovie Ejaria both on season-long loans from Monaco and Liverpool, respectively.

Alongside these two, Rafael, a free agent, was brought in as strong competition to Joao Virginia. The latter hasn't had the best of starts in the Reading goal and the Royals supporters will be feeling more comfortable about the situation having watched Rafael's debut heroics on Tuesday night.

The signings that brought the most attention to the club were the strikers that were brought in. Lucas Joao joined from Sheffield Wednesday whilst George Puscas signed from Italian giants Inter Milan. A sea of excitement and relief filled through Reading supporters, as after years of struggling to find out and out forwards in the market - it appears as though the Royals have two.

José Gomes has stated all pre-season the need for improvements in the squad and he'll be delighted that the Royals have managed to bring in a number of new faces.

The players that have been brought in are of a high calibre and have all at some point in their career proven themselves at a high enough level to be able to transform this Reading side into one that can fight in the top half of the table.

There will be many fans of the Championship, including Reading's, who will be wondering how these players will fit into the squad, and what sort of formation Gomes will be looking to play.

On Tuesday, the Portuguese boss played with five defenders. Something that has been done at Reading previously under Jaap Stam when the team came 3rd in the Championship. This wouldn't be a surprise if it were to continue. With Mo Barrow leaving the club there is currently a lack of wingers in the squad.

The Royals would be able to use the width of attacking full-back Andy Yiadom on the right whilst having options of youngster Omar Richards or Tyler Blackett on the left.

This would allow last week's new signings to play in their favoured positions. Pelé could play in the central position, most likely next to last season's player of the season Andy Rinomhota, whilst Ovie Ejaria could take up the role just behind the two strikers. The battle between John Swift and Ejaria this season is sure to be an interesting one, especially with Swift's excellent early season form.

Puscas and Joao would lead the line up front. An attacking line-up that could now frighten any Championship team's defence on any given day, which furthermore highlights how important that last week of business was for Reading.

Gomes will feel he now has a squad capable of competing with every team in this year's Championship. Players such as Yakou Méité and Lucas Boyé haven't even been mentioned, showing the quality that the Royals could now have, even on their bench.

If the team hits form, who knows where the new signings could take them.
