Leeds United fans will be very happy with their summer transfer business, despite losing their talismanic figure Chris Wood to Burnley in the closing stages of the window.

The New Zealand international scored 30 goals in all competitions for the Whites last term, in a campaign where Garry Monk’s men narrowly missed out on a Championship playoff spot.

New boss Thomas Christiansen, though, has made a great start to his managerial career at Elland Road; the Yorkshire club remain unbeaten after 4 league games, winning twice and drawing twice too.

Whilst the signings of Samuel Saiz and Ezgjan Alioski look shrewd acquisitions for United though, was the need to replace Wood is a must, as well as strengthening in other areas too?

Here, FLW writer George Harbey identifies TWO players that Christiansen really should have looked to sign before the window closed...

Benik Afobe

Although, Leeds brought in a striker by the name of Pierre-Michel Lasogga on a season-long loan move on Deadline Day, one cannot not go without thinking that Afobe would have been a shrewd replacement for Wood.

The striker is no stranger to finding the back of the net in the second tier, and was infact the joint highest goalscorer in England in the 2014/15 campaign when he was at Wolves, along with Harry Kane; the pair scored 32 goals each in all competitions.

With £15 million at their disposal following Wood's departure, Leeds should have arguably looked to have landed the prolific Afobe...

Dwight Gayle

Another prolific forward that Christiansen should have looked to have signed is Newcastle's Dwight Gayle.

There seemed to be no end of reports suggesting that Gayle was set to leave St. James' Park, and Leeds should have been the club to have pounced on this uncertainty.

Gayle was a massive contender for the Championship Golden Boot last campaign along with Wood, and would have been a fabulous asset for any Championship club, especially Leeds...

The Verdict:

Although Leeds' need for a striker isn't currently a priority, what with the latest signing of Lasogga, one can't help but feel that the funds from Wood's departure could have been used to find a proven goalscorer in the second tier, who can guarantee Leeds' place in the top two come the end of this season...
